I'm starting to realize how when people say "this is the way things are" it's a reflection of the fact not so much they are accepting of it, but rather they feel powerless to change it. They don't feel powerless to change it only because of hopelessness though. There's also an element of them not talking about particular issues with anyone else. When they don't talk about the issues with others it's not because they don't want to, but rather because other people probably know as much as they do about the issues. Not very much. The information we receive is so limited that we really don't even feel like we know much about the issue. If we don't feel like we know much about the issue we're afraid to discuss it. The only people who aren't afraid to discuss it are those people who scream about stuff. People who scream about stuff might know more but they are still screaming and you can't have a conversation with someone who is screaming. You don't want to have a conversation with someone who is screaming. Many of my friends scream about stuff and have very poor methods of outreach (sorry, it's true) as a result the message gets lost on people who how a slower learning curve.
When these are your only options and you don't know where to find information because there are so many sources which have no reputation behind them (outside circles of people who scream) you feel helpless and like you don't know where to start looking. As a result "this is the way things are."
There are a lot of people though who are not as immersed in the internet. It seems like there are a lot but at the same time unless you actively search out different things your search results are going to be very tailored to the "well, what can you do" mindset.
I would assume any one commenting on this status knows what livestreaming is, and that I do it. A lot of people do not know about it. Different streaming services are being marketed as a hot new thing (Periscope and Meerkat.) Meanwhile people who already streamed and knew about streaming were like "What? We've been doing this for 4 year now." What many people don't realize is how few people were actually exposed to livestreaming. They may know it exists but only vaguely.
When OWS was around it got underground attention via livestreaming. Once it had so much attention from that the mainstream was obligated to pick it up. The MSM wasn't really blasting out streaming links so much though. They mentioned Timcast but they didn't really actively promote. He got promotion in more hip and techie oriented magazines and some bigger ones. Hip and techie sources are NOT mainstream. There was a demographic that barely had any exposure to livestream at all. All they had was MSM and so the idea that streaming is so easy just hasn't clicked. The MSM talked about the the protests themselves, on their own.
