Two National Holidays are Needed
Holiday Number One: Appomatox Day, celebrating the victory of America and civilization over the Rebellion of the Slaveholders.
Holiday Number Two: Juneteenth. That's today, as I type, so happy Juneteenth!
Conveniently, one of the dates comes in the Spring, when there are few holidays, and the other happens near the end of the public school year.
A bit more below the fold:
Why? As the lawyers say, res ipsa. The matter speaks for itself.
On Appomatox today, the chief army of the Slaveholders surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse, Virginia.
And Juneteenth?
I quote from Juneteenth World Wide Celebration, though there are many other sources:
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
