Yes, the massacre in South Carolina was motivated by racial hatred that was fueled by the center and right wing media and even by the archaic presence of the Confederate flag. It was also enabled by the woefully easy access to guns that is an absurd and also archaic part of the American culture, but...fighting many of those issues (the flag thing seems to be getting some traction at last) will meet too much resistance to accomplish anything more than was accomplished during the last few massacres.
However, in order to pivot away from these issues, right wing commentators and politicians have chosen to emphasize the need for more mental health care. For godsakes, jump on it. How often in the past has mental health care been divorced from other medical care by these same conservatives? How often have government sponsored medical plans that include mental health components been stripped of those components? If these guys think this horrible tragedy was caused by a mental health issue--and, along with everything else, it obviously was--then get them as quickly as possible to put their money where their mouthes are, before the emotions fade, and enable greater funding for all mental health care. Bring equity to the status of drug addiction, depression, PTSD and so on, so that it is treated with the same amount of attention and vigor as cancer, diabetes and other diseases. In the long run, it will absolutely aid in the reduction of these tragedies. Not as much as some sensible gun control, but more than doing nothing at all. If there is a will at the moment on all sides of the political spectrum to act, please, take advantage of it rather than arguing against it.
Seize the day!
