With his vote today in the Obergafell decision, Chief Justice John Roberts revealed the deep political cynicism of his vote yesterday in King v. Burwell, and sealed his fate in the history books. Roberts' vote on the ACA decision was motivated not by his Christian faith or a deep legal acumen, but by a political cynicism designed solely to save the 2016 electoral bacon of Republican Party.
This decision on marriage equality, a 5-4 vote on a cultural issue, will not turn out the same way other cultural issue decisions did - Roe v. Wade or Brown v. Board of Education or Heart of Atlanta Motel (1964) which upheld the Civil Rights Act, solely because this time, SCOTUS is following U.S. public opinion, rather than trying to lead it.
However, this will not be the end, as the "Christian" Right seeks to enact Religious Liberty laws.
And this reality underscores, yet again, the importance of keeping a Democrat in the White House in 2016, because it is unlikely that the Notorious RBG will be able to outlast another Republican presidency.
