Those of us who were tuned in to Up with Steve on MSNBC this morning (7/12/2015) reacted this way when Senator Chris Murphy said Republicans were looking at the Iran Nuclear Deal through "Obama Colored Glasses":
If you're asking yourself why it's problematic that a sitting Democrat U.S. Senator used "Obama Colored Glasses" in a nationally televised interview, I searched twitter using "obama colored glasses" and "obama colored lenses" and the following tweets may help to clarify:
Then there's also comments by perpetual verbal diarrhea afflicted RWNJ Rush Limbaugh :
"See, the whole point of all this, the reason why the Democrats led by Obama see the world through race-colored glasses is the election coming up. It's their primary tool to turn out their base and their voters, because they don't have anything policy-wise that's going to do it." - Rush Limbaugh
I'm sure there are millions of other examples of variations of this "race colored" or "Obama colored glasses" vitriol on the internet, the aforementioned quotes were a very small sampling of what's out there. However, I don't think Senator Murphy intended to sound racist or insensitive, but honestly given the pervasive antagonistic racism that has been aimed at President Obama during his entire presidency, one would think a senator, particularly a senator of the same party, may take a little more care with his word choice.
