I see a diary on the wreck list deploring the circular firing squad that's developing in the democratic party between Clinton and Sanders supporters. In comments I read comment after comment about how horrible Sanders supporters are and expressing outrage at those declaring they won't vote for Clinton should she win the nomination (I'm not one of them). All of you saying these things have some nerve.
Clinton supporters need to reflect a little bit about what's gone down the last seven years. Many, if not most of us, were passionate Obama supporters in 2008. Oh yeah, you can be a snide asshole and tell us that if we'd only looked at his platform we would have known he was a moderate. You're right. Our bad, we really believed in hope and change and feel that we had our work, our support, and our hope cynically abused by an administration that didn't stand up to Wall Street, that gave the farm away to the republicans in negotiations, that instituted horrible educational policy, and a host of other things. We were tricked and used by the establishment.
For 7 years members of that establishment and its supporters vilified us in every way. They called us retards. They talked about us being naive fools that want unicorns, ponies, and that believe in magic wands. They gave us obnoxious and dickish lectures about pragmatism and realism (showing an utter lack of knowledge of the philosophy of pragmatism, btw). They blamed us for 2010. And they endlessly insinuated that disappointment, profound disappointment, with Obama was a reflection of racism among progressives. And all the while the establishment leaders and their apologists among the rank and file acted entitled to our votes, all the while talking to us like we're despicable scum for having problems with how big business has taken over every part of the world and government and is destroying the climate.
Now we hear all the same things coming from supporters of the next establishment candidate, Clinton. We have front pagers telling us Clinton is the nominee so just deal. We're told that we are treating Sanders like a saint and a messiah. Our issues with campaign finance are dismissed or rationalized away. We're told that these issues, which effect every single person in the country and world, are white male issues. We're told that we live in a delusion. We're constantly asked to make guarantees that we'll vote for Clinton in the general should she win the nomination.
Yeah, you have some nerve. You deride us at every turn and diminish our issues, treating them like they're non-issues, all the while demanding our vote and support. You talk about those of us who are outraged by how the government that's supposed to be ours has abandoned us and works on behalf of corporate interests. You speak as if the debt that renders nearly every American an indentured servant, the usury rife throughout our economy, were nothing compared to a historic victory. You say those who've had it are engaged in a circular firing squad. You're really surprised some are refusing to support the establishment candidate? Maybe you should consider a lighter touch and a little big more respect.
