I love Dunkin Donuts....I really, really do. I like Krspy Kreme too but the coffee is just not as good and they don't have as many retail locations where I live as Dunkin Donuts so it is my "go-to" doughnut place.
Not any more. I ate my last donut today. I was clicking my many stock market sites today and clicked on CNN Money. The CEO of Dunkin Donuts is Nigel Travis. He pulls down about $10.2 million a year.....that's a hell of a lot of donuts. But that's not why I'm swearing off donuts.
Nigel Travis was responding to the possibility of a $15.00 minimum wage for NYC fast food workers. He thinks that is "outrageous". Really Nigel?
Dunkin' Brand (DNKN) CEO Nigel Travis says the plan will do more harm than good.
Travis said he supports governments making "reasonable increases" to the minimum wage, but a hike to $15 per hour represents a 71% increase over the current state minimum.
"It's going to affect small businesses and franchises," Travis said in an interview with CNN's Poppy Harlow. He said it would prevent his multi-billion dollar company from hiring new people.
He thinks maybe $12.00 is more reasonable for a worker with a family. I think that if Mr. Travis actually cared about what a living wage is and what it needs to be for a working family he would have done a small amount of research.....like CNN Money did at the bottom of the article which stated the living wage for a family of 4 would need to be $18.30 per hour. Perhaps he's not paying his assistants enough or doesn't want to bother with those trivial details.
I would send this to Mr. Travis in an email, but he hasn't made that publicly available so I'm going to send him a letter telling him I will miss my donuts but I can't justify that lovely treat that helps him make $10.2 million a year with his current position on living wages for workers. It would just be too hard to swallow.
If you feel like dropping Mr. Travis a note, here's his snail mail address:
