BREAKING: Activists Stop Shell Vessel as It Attempts to Leave Portland Harbor
A major environmental protest action is underway right this moment here in Portland Oregon. Shell Oil wants to drill the Arctic, and they can't do so without the Fennica, their icebreaker (CLIMATE-BREAKER is more like it).
Sadly for Shell, they took their climate-breaker on a shortcut and hit a reef, ripping open a 3 foot long hole in the hull. After that brilliant move, they drove the Fennica to Portland for repairs. Portland! We're probably the largest, liberal-est city they could have found. Now they are stuck behind a line of 13 brave Greenpeace protesters hanging in mid-air from the iconic St. Johns bridge.
In case you haven't been following this debacle, Shell's latest series of errors comes on the heels of the absolute clusterf*ck that was their 2012 attempt at drilling. Kudos to the NY Times for some excellent reporting on that story: The Wreck of the Kulluk
I'll be joining the protest later, out on the water underneath the skywalkers. If anyone can add some images to this story, please do!
