As an aside, I'm a UU, so I'm more aware of events at GA than the other events.
In the past few weeks there have been annual meetings of three of America's progressive religions. The Episcopal Church held their general convention, United Church of Christ (UCC) held their General Synod and the Unitarian Universalists (UUA) met for General Assembly.
In an eventful period for the nation, there was good news for progressives coming out of these meetings. I don't generally follow the Episcopals, but they voted to join the UCC and UUA in same sex marriage equality and divest some of their funds from fossil fuels.
The United Church of Christ primarily made the news for voting to voting to divest from Israel, but they also passed resolutions related to mass incarceration, labeling genetically modified food, and removing demeaning names from NFL teams among others.
The Unitarian Universalist General Assembly (GA) this year voted on a reproductive justice statement of conscience (draft (pdf)) as well as witness actions urging support for climate justice and closure of family ICE detention centers. And, making the rounds on UU social media this week is a blog showing how universal UU support for LGBT has become.
The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee gave their annual award to Representative John Lewis. GA also held a public witness event with members of the Lummi Nation concerned with climate change.
Cornel West gave a moving Ware Lecture as part of GA, you can find him speaking in the 42nd minute. Its a moving and inspirational speech if you have the time.
And now I return to the inky shadows I normally lurk in.
