Monroe Bird
Two months
I told you about an awesome young man in Oklahoma named Monroe Bird. Beloved by family and friends, he was shot from behind by a security guard in his own neighborhood while sitting in his car with a friend. The security guard, 57-year-old Ricky Stone, was
found with marijuana in his bag on the scene, but police refused to arrest him.
Paralyzed, his parents' insurance company refused to pay for his medical coverage because the guard, despite opposing statements from witnesses, stated that Monroe tried to run over him. Monroe had not been in trouble a day in his life.
Forced to return home instead of going to a hospital for long-term rehabilitation and care, more than 1,000 kind-hearted people raised more than $35,000 to purchase a hospital bed and some basic equipment so he could stay at home.
He needed attention and care 24/7.
He needed a nurse, doctors, and a medical staff to care for him. His family showered him with love, but they weren't trained for this type of attention.
After getting a blood clot in his leg, which can often happen with paralyzed patients, particularly if they are not moved frequently, Monroe Bird died.
So many systems and people failed this young man. All indications are that he should be alive and well today.
The healthcare system failed Monroe by not paying for his coverage. It's outrageous and absolutely contributed to his death.
The justice system failed Monroe when they refused to take the case against the security guard seriously.
True or not, it feels like we all failed this young man for not fighting hard enough in the aftermath to ensure he received the care he so desperately needed.
Sigh.
