I cannot think of a scenario where I’d vote for Donald Trump in November 2016. That said, I hope Trump wins the GOP nomination for President. I don’t want him to win because he would be easy to beat. I’m not sure that is the case, remember how easy it was defeating the B-movie actor, Reagan, and the not too bright Bush II.
Trump might very well be the most difficult of the gang of seventeen to beat. I want him to win the GOP nomination because he is the best of the seventeen.
It is impossible to predict elections this far out and the best candidate does not always win. It is possible some world event (real, manufactured, or imaginary), rather than current political issues, will determine our next President. If such a situation arises, and it becomes inevitable that the GOP will move back into the White House, I want it to be Trump.
Trump has faults but they are no different than the other sixteen, who are often far worse. Trump is not going to spend time infringing the civil rights our gay/lesbian citizens recently won. He will not carry water for the Koch brothers or Fox News. He might agree with them on some or even many issues but they will not be pulling the strings like Koch will for Walker.
Yes, he is a sexist, but so are all the others. He is outrageous and often politically incorrect, but so are the others. He might be anti-abortion rights but he will not be pushing it like some and he will not go for banning them for rape, incest, or health of the mother. He hasn’t actually even said he would try to overturn Roe v. Wade. He would never push for defining personhood at the moment of conception.
He talks big about building a wall and making Mexico pay for it. It is just talk, he is not going to build a wall. The cost is prohibitive and there are so many environmental issues.
Trump will not repeal Obamacare without something to replace it that covers as many or more people. He has been for single payer in the past and recently said we need to cover more people.
He is a billionaire and like many billionaires would probably be happy to have a few more billion. But he has commented that some of the rules of the game he used were not fair. It is unlikely that he will make reducing economic inequality a goal, but the others are promising policies that will increase inequality.
Trump has not spelled out his political agenda. He dodges getting specific on cultural, economic, and foreign policy issues. That is a plus and I hope it gets him the GOP nomination. Then it will be up to the Democrats to run as Democrats rather than Republican Lite.
