A tweet by Australia's current PM is having a sudden surge in retweets.
When the Australian Labor Party gained power in 2007 they elected Harry Jenkins as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a position his father (Dr Harry Jenkins) had held from 1983 to 1986.
At the 2010 election Labor failed to achieve a majority and only formed government with the help of independent members. Harry, however, was again elected unopposed. The tightness of the numbers led to problems. In May 2011, Jenkins named Liberal MP Bob Baldwin and the resulting vote on suspending Baldwin for 24 hours was lost 71-72 (Rob Oakenshott an independent who help Labor gain power supported Baldwin). Convention is the Speaker, unable to control parliament resign, but there was an immediate vote of confidence in the Speaker and he remained in the role. But Jenkins' position was weakened. In November 2011 Jenkins finally resigned the role, stating a desire to participate in policy and debate which he could not do as Speaker. His replacement was a renegade Liberal Party member, and the speaker's inability to vote gave strengthened Labor's position
To make some political gain from this, the following tweet was made by the twitter account of the then leader of the opposition, Tony Abbot:
At the next election the conservative Liberal Party won (with the help of its coalition partners the National Party) and formed government, Abbott became Prime Minister and Bronwyn Bishop as elected as the new Speaker. The term "battleaxe" may be sexist and ageist but it truly applies to Bishop who achieved a recorded for Australian parliament:
ejecting 18 members from the chamber in one day.
Things recently have not gone well for Bishop. The revelation of an incident involving using her travel expenses to hire a helicopter to fly to a party fund raiser at a golf course instead of traveling less than a hour by car was particularly meme-worthy and marked the beginning of the end for her. On 2nd of August 2015 it was announced that Bishop had resigned as Speaker.
And thus Abbott's 2011 tweet gained new life. As you can see in the image above it was found and retweeted because of the ironic juxtaposition of the tweet and current events. The number of retweets above is 460. I don't know how many of those are from the 2011 and how many were made after Bishop's resignation. What I can tell you is this:
The number as I type this is 2,727. A significant increase, wouldn't you say?
