I had a bit of a laugh this morning listening to Weekend Edition on NPR. They had the conservative blogger Jennifer Rubin on talking about Donald Trump's latest faux pas. For those of you having difficulty keeping track of them all, this time he made a comment suggesting Megyn Kelly's aggressive questioning was a result of her having her period.
Rubin tried to portray this as Donald Trump's downfall and the end of Republican support for him. She expressed shocked at his crudeness and insensitivity towards women, arguing that Republican women would turn on him. Never mind the fact that pundits previously said that after his comments on Sen. John McCain.
My Gut Reaction: Rubin and her conservative friends have only themselves to blame, as the Republican Party and its media lackeys have gone out of their way to foster the tiger they're currently riding.
As commentators on the Young Turks have pointed out, the Republicans are dealing with a monster of their own creation. Through Fox News and other outlets, they have promoted a hardline, red meat style of conservatism that disdains political correctness, openly promotes sexism and racism, and prides itself on "blunt" talk.
Well, now that wing of the Republican Party has its own candidate, one who is self-financing and has openly stated his willingness to run as an independent. Republicans like Jennifer Rubin are beginning to get alarmed, as are the head honchos at Fox. As the Young Turks have suggested, Fox News, which is ultimately run by establishment millionaires, is trying to tame the tiger it has unleashed. Megyn Kelly directed her most aggressive questioning at Trump, only to hear the crowd cheer when he said he refused to be politically correct.
In the Tea Party and talk radio, the Republicans have bred a tiger, and its getting hungry.
