I was taking a walk last night around our neighborhood with my wife when the discussion turned to the Clinton email issue. My wife is no dummy, she is a Ph.D. clinical psychologist, but it quickly became clear to me that she didn't understand what the problem was because she had no idea how our home computer connected to the internet. Follow me below to see why I think the email issue will become more important, not less, as more people begin to understand the real problem.
I explained to my wife that a server was a machine, a special purpose computer, that was used only to connect other computers to the internet. I explained that our internet service provider, Comcast, had their own servers which connected to the internet. I went on to explain that someone who sent an email to Hillary had no way of knowing from the email address that the server used to connect Hillary to the internet was a private machine stored in a private residence rather than a dedicated server under government control in some secure location. I said that the Watergate burglary was a minor thing compared to something which put the security of the country at risk because of vulnerability to unknown hackers, and there was no way to determine if the information on Hillary's server had been compromised.
I don't claim to be an expert on networking, but I wanted to point out that information which we might assume was well known to the general public, might in fact, be something which many people need some education to understand.
