I have to admit I have always had an engineering mindset and so paid more attention to computers than to history class. In college I barely had any humanities requirements. When I could I substituted tech writing, science classes or foreign language. I therefore managed to not study any history since high school.
My high school history teacher though had a unique way of explaining the cause and effect of events in history. He wasn't focused on dates and names, but instead on why things happened and he presented the information using flowcharts.
He recently posted a diagram with a very high level flowchart of the situation in the middle east that I thought would useful share.
