No money for retirees of County Hospital, but Jackson County Board of Supervisors votes to give $56,000 to the YMCA.
For months we have heard how the Jackson County Board of Supervisors can't help the retirees of the County Hospital with their pension plan woes because they have a "private" plan. And supposedly they can't contribute to private organizations, business etc. Except when they can.
Jackson County Supervisor Troy Ross brought it up: giving the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA in Ocean Springs $56,000 in tax dollars to finish its building project and parking lot.
He called it "a little help" and justified it by saying it keeps the county from having to provide a pool for citizens. The Y does that for those who can afford it, he said at the Board of Supervisors meeting Monday.
He said the Y is a Christian organization with "good old-fashioned values" and helps spread those values.
Meanwhile the County Hospital retirees are still in limbo over what will happen with their pensions.
Retirees from Singing River Health System are reaching out to President Barak Obama, the national media and national personalities in an effort to get their message out: "Do the right thing" about the system's failing pension plan.
