Insurance Blues
They're crazy, not me.
We rented a car for the Epic Glacier Meet-up. I was pleased with it because it was a nice car and it was brand new. I rented it from a company which I shall call
E. I declined the insurance because my credit card company, which I shall call
A, assured me that I had full coverage as a part of their package of benefits.
During the four hours the car was parked in the lodge parking lot while we rode with the group up the Going-to-the-Sun road, someone scraped the space under the passenger door. It was odd enough that I surmised it had to be a wheelchair because it was inside of the car's contour. This was a small but noticeable mark which could be felt as well as seen.
When we turned the car in I mentioned the scrape. It is possible that they might have missed it but I figured I'd be honest. This initiated a flurry of activity including inspections and much paperwork. They charged me the rental fee plus $500. I was assured that this would be refunded by the insurance company.
Keep in mind that this occurred in June. When I got home I contacted the insurance department at
A. This began a series of calls and e-mails that continue to this day. I am shunted from department to department and speak to many people, some rude and some sympathetic. I am asked for details which are already in their possession, obvious because they are displayed on the documents sent by the very entity with whom I'm speaking. They console me by saying "Sometimes these claims take several weeks to resolve."
Last week I received an e-mail from
A saying they were "closing your claim at this time". This was because they hadn't received thus and so from
E. I immediately contacted
E and maybe lost my cool a bit, whereupon they assured me they would comply. Still no action or resolution. As I think about it, the administrative cost including employee time, letters and e-mails sent, answering my phone calls, etc. must be far over the $500 by now. I joked with one sympathetic employee that this was taking longer than building the Golden Gate Bridge.
They are trying to wear me down but being retired I have the time and I intend to win, but I imagine some folks just give up eventually.
So has anyone here have this sort of experience with credit card insurance? We are advised never to take the rental company's insurance due to the incredibly high cost but I wouldn't be surprised at this point that the same sort of runaround could accompany that insurance as well. I suspect that many people have insurance horror stories; tell us about them and we will
laugh sympathize.
On the tomato front, we have been harvesting and dehydrating hundreds upon hundreds of them and eating them in some form three meals a day. And they keep on coming. And although the pole beans finished more than a week ago we discovered a second flush of blossoms and we are able to have fresh beans every night. And the freezer is packed with beans as well.
