I live in the reddest of the red states. Mississippi. Oh, the images I’m sure that conjures up in your heads. We are the buckle of the Bible Belt. We are first in all the bad things and last in all the good ones. We battle for last place with Arkansas, and the joke is that our state motto should be “Thank Heaven for Arkansas”. Without them, we’d really suck even more than we already do. But nothing beats the loneliness of being a lone liberal surrounded by card carrying Republicans who think The Donald has all the right ideas.
You may have heard about our recent elections, where we had a Democratic candidate that nobody had ever heard about running for Governor, someone who had never even voted before, and there he was on the ballot. How did this happen, you may ask.
Well, let me tell you what I think.
I think it’s because we have totally been deserted by the DNC. What little we have in the way of a Democratic party in this state is totally on it’s own. We get no money or help in trying to find qualified candidates to run in state or local elections, which means we end up with a candidate for Governor who only got the nomination because his name was listed first on the primary ballot. We have been deserted. And those of us who are blue dots in this sea of red are so spread out that getting together is next to impossible. If you shouted out “Marco” it’d be 6 weeks before somebody answered “Polo”. We get no ads in the mail, no robocalls from Democratic candidates for any office, no nothing. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada.
How the hell are we supposed to get rid of all these backassward Republican idiots if we get no help? Well, we can’t. Pure and simple, we are lost at sea, and nobody’s looking for us. The DNC talks about a 50 state strategy, but I haven’t seen it yet, at least not here. Hell, Eddie Izzard is doing a better job of getting to all 50 states than the DNC is. And he’s a comedian. Which is appropriate in a way, because any “support” we get from the DNC is a joke. Saying you’re wishing us luck ain’t gonna cut it, y’all.
Maybe I just haven’t found the right blue dot around here to tell this to, but it’s looking pretty hopeless to me. Though I must say that the recent election of a Democrat to the Governorship in Louisiana is a step forward. Of course, Jindal isn’t much of an act to follow, even a drooling baby could do better than he did over there.
And our Guv isn’t much better, being (in my opinion) an accomplice to murder, since he won’t expand Medicaid, and several studies have shown that if Medicaid isn’t expanded, people die. He even stopped our Insurance Commissioner from setting up a state run clearinghouse for people getting health care, thereby assuring that those who need it will have as many obstructions in their path as possible. He doesn’t care, he plays by the Republican playbook, which is to make it impossible for something to work, and then blame Obama when it doesn’t.
So there you are, my life as a lonely blue dot. I begging for some moral support here, because it sure doesn’t look like the DNC is sending any over anytime soon.
Till next time, y’all.
