“I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption.
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way”
Which of course we all know to some extent “my way” is not always the correct way. Which brings us to the theme of this diary. Regrets, mistakes, or just plain old do overs.
When we bought our house, which I called the bulldozer special, the wife had her doubts I could pull off a miracle, and make it livable. As soon as I walked into the place it all came together at once as to what I was going to do. Walls had to be moved. Actual rooms were moved. The kitchen was in the back, which I considered poor placement, so it was moved to the front of the house. I bring this up, because of my knack for seeing what most people can’t when it comes to simple architecture. Granted I would never attempt to build a house from the ground up, that’s for the jayden’s of this world who excel at more than just basic math.
Now we move to the outside, and my brain literally shuts down. I don’t see the sweeping flower beds lined with a simple rock wall, or garden feature placed ever so perfectly. A little jut, or setback in just the right spot. walking through the garden centers I see plants that in my minds eye won’t work due to it’s height, or color, only to see that same plant in someone else s yard, which functions magically. It’s a talent that many here have, and I am truly envious.
One mistake I need to rectify this winter into spring is my tree lined frontage
They look beautiful, don’t they?
The problem is they were not supposed to grow that tall, and have all but shut off the afternoon sun to the front yard. The other mistake was planting them too close together. I did want them to pretty much grow into each other, but again, goodbye sun. So the plan is to totally remove four of the eight, and the goal is to build a 50’ x 18’ bed with a knoll meandering through it in the center of the lawn.
Below will be the area for the new front bed. A blank canvas in a sea of green. I do know for sure at least two Viburnums will make the cut for this new bed with a flag pole in the center of it all. Beyond that Frank Sinatra, and I will be singing while I try not to muck it up too bad.
One of my other big regrets was planting Trumpet vine four or five (maybe more) years back. To the left of the red maple you can see it making it’s way up the tri-oak. Need I say more on that little diddy!? So there ya have it. Tell us what you consider a major flub, or just poor planing when it comes to gardening. I did notice many here like to grow in containers,or pots. Probably an excellent way to keep the flubs to a minimum. Problem is, I’m not a pot type of guy, and will undoubtedly pay a price for that also. The floor is now yours watcha got for us fellow gardeners.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and weed free new year.
