I predict that gasoline will not get up to 3$ per gallon again until most cars on the road are electric, sometime around 2030. Great news for dinosaur drivers like me!
The bell is tolling for the internal combustion fart machines.
For one, people like power. The Tesla already beats most super cars in 0-60 times. The record holder for the Pikes Peak Run is electric and it won the title even though the rear drive system failed half way thru the course! There are race cars that exceed 220 mph. You can plunk down a pile of cash and get your classic muscle car converted to electric by Blood Shed Motors.
Then there’s the cost factor. Presently, ordinary electrics are more expensive than their gas counterparts, but the massive reduction in parts and complexity will soon reverse that. As the battery manufacturing infrastructure matures, the cost will drop to commodity levels. An electric motor has 1 moving part compared to thousands in a gas engine.
Finally, there’s the convenience factor. How would you like to never visit a gas station ever again?
Instead, you just plug your car in when you get home and forget about it. They are even working on wireless charging, so the average 9 to 5, don’t know or care about cars person can completely ignore the entire subject.
So, gas is going to get cheaper & cheaper to compete with electric. Its regularly dipping under 2$ now due mainly to an oil supply glut and the electric revolution will continue the supression. Don’t be surprised to see it go under 1$ in the next 10 years — Oh wait! It already did! (brief price war in Michigan, got down to 47.9 cents)
But, sometime around 2025, 2030 after electrics have taken over, you will need to special order gas for your antique and it wont be cheap. Hopefully, I will have converted my 72 New Yorker to electric and a self driving system by then.
And who knows — by then, maybe I will be saving up for a hover conversion!
