The need of Republicans to lower the public discourse and pander to the racist nature of its base is becoming an epidemic.
In the last twenty-four hours, Chris Christie, has called the President of the United States a “petulant child,” and Donald Trump has said he, (President Obama) does not want to work with Congress on gun legislation “because it’s too much work.” Coded language does not hide the loaded and racist name calling aimed at the first Black President. In the eyes of his opposition the President can’t ever simply be wrong, in their opinion, he has to be lawless and a liar in virtually every instance. The need to make him a sinister, calculating figure is designed to appeal to the racism, that fuels a group angered by the successes of Mr. Obama. Nothing creates irrational anger like the success of your enemy.
The saving of the auto industry and literally millions of jobs was characterized as a socialist experiment to redistribute wealth. The implementation of governmental intervention to revive and save the banking industry, thereby saving the world’s economy, was somehow a backdoor portal to provide “free stuff” for the underserved and lazy. The successful hunt for and killing of Osama Bin Laden, in conservative circles, was the byproduct of a lucky man with no idea of foreign policy.
I remember how the President’s use of the word “we” during his announcement of the death of Bin Laden was ridiculed by Fox News as the selfish meanderings of a man trying to steal credit from the heroism of the Navy Seals. President George W. Bush, showing up in a flight suit on the carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, with a ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner in the background, declaring victory following the ouster of Suddam Hussein was, in contrast, just the act of a proud President. In reality this was truly a delusional display by the former President, mired in a burgeoning disaster. All the current President’s accomplishments, from lowering the deficit by nearly a half trillion dollars, to bringing down, by half, the unemployment rate are all lucky coincidence, according to the right.
After years of cultivating fear and fomenting anger filled anti Obama tirades, the neo-cons and conservatives have reached their goal, a return to outward racism, in full view of the world. The next openly racist utterance you hear in public, ask yourself, are you ever surprised the speaker is a Republican?
