Missouri Democrat Jason Kander has run a disciplined, smart, and engaging campaign for the Senate. Incumbent Republican Roy Blunt has, well, not.
Larry Sabato and his University of Virginia Center for Politics has moved Missouri’s Senate race from “leans Republican” to “tossup.”
The center’s analysis:
Our one other change comes in the Senate, where Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) is fighting for his political life. Both Democrats and Republicans now view this race as a Toss-up, and we’re moving it from Leans Republican to reflect that consensus.
Blunt hasn't helped himself one bit, standing by Donald Trump even after the video leak of Trump bragging about how his fame lets him get away with anything: "Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything." Blunt brushed that aside, saying that while Trump's words were "disrespectful and innapppriate," he was "right to apologize." As if what Trump did was apologize. He also told TPM, referring to that "apology," that he is "glad to see that he understands more about the country now than he believes he did when this process started."
That's a pretty fucking low bar for your support for a presidential candidate, Sen. Blunt, and a miscalculation in Missouri. He might recall another Missouri Republican who famously misunderstood the whole woman thing—in a presidential election year, no less—and went down in humiliating flames. Blunt might have a talk with Todd Akin about that. Or his Senate colleague Claire McCaskill (not that she's likely to be giving him any advice).
Jason Kander is much closer to taking this one. And Democrats can take the Senate back. Let's close this out.
