I recently saw a poll asking if I thought we should have either freedom of religion or freedom from discrimination. I thought this was a weird question, until I realized that many people believe that it is their duty to discriminate based on religious belief. This comes from two things: first a lack of understanding of their own religion. Understanding does not come from following the teachings of a particular religious leader. There are no religious leaders in Christianity or Islam or Judaism that actually have any authority from God to interpret the scriptures of their religion. Centuries of human interpretation, unfounded in scripture or misunderstanding of scripture have brought religious doctrines that would alarm and revolt the founders of religion. Wars, genocides, tortures, and slavery have all been part of religious teaching that was founded not in scripture but in the minds of men seeking to justify their actions. The second reason that people use to justify their acts of discrimination is their belief that everyone is subject to their religious laws and teachings. No where in any scripture is this found. If that were true, then Christians would not eat pork. A subset of this thinking is the picking and choosing of religious laws and teachings. This kind of Pharisaic thinking is totally without scriptural support.
The point of all of this is that discrimination is not justifiable by religion. Thus, freedom of religion is not freedom to discriminate and the question of the pollster is a non sequitur.
