(I’m on the Trump campaign email list because I signed up for tickets to a Trump rally shortly after the conventions. For the past week or so I’ve received 6 to 8 fundraising solicitations per day.)
The title of this morning’s email was “We’re Being Overrun.” It went on to talk of a “tidal wave” that is engulfing America, and that unnamed persons are “contaminating” our pure, clean country.
For the sake of plausible deniability, the email went on to explain that what was meant was not what the inflammatory and suggestive language would seem to imply:
I’m talking about the politically correct, liberal, elitist ideals that are eroding this country. The corruption and backroom shady deals that we see from these professional politicians. The cover-ups over “lost” emails and horrible tragedies like Benghazi. It’s time to take our country back Dennis. It’s time to STOP this inside-the-beltway nonsense.
Will you join our movement to take our country back by contributing $35, $50, or $100 to our Final Election Push right now? We need to win on Election Day if we want any chance to stop this tidal wave of corruption and job-killing liberal policies that have been plaguing our nation’s capital and destroying our country.
Expressions like “overrun,” “tidal wave” and “contamination” have nothing to do with political correctness, liberal elitism, backroom deals, emails or Benghazi. These dog whistles — or bullhorn blasts — clearly were an appeal to those who fear Mexican and Muslim hordes, pouring into the U.S. intent on rape, murder and terrorism. It is an appeal to the same Confederate flag-wavers whose growing rage and resentment Trump has been stoking ever since he began his campaign.
Trump is now indeed unshackled by any inclination to offer a coherent rationale for voting for him, and he is now reduced to inciting fear, anger and who-knows-what-else in his most credulous followers.
Coincidentally, I received an email yesterday from Reince Priebus which referred me to a GOP voter survey asking for my feedback on the presidential campaign. Since Reince was kind enough to ask for my opinion, I felt that the least I could do was to share my thoughts with him.
