Today’s Hillary News & Views begins with Clinton on the campaign trail in Ohio.
CNN reports:
"Trump was taking from America with both hands and leaving the rest of us with the bill."
The Times story, Clinton said, "tells us everything we need to know about how Trump does business."
"After he made all those bad bets and lost all that money, he didn't lift a finger to protect his employees, or all the small businesses or the contractors he'd hired, or the people of Atlantic City," she said. "They all got hammered while he was busy with his accountants trying to figure out how he could keep living like a billionaire."
"Here is my question: What kind of genius loses a billion dollars in a single year?" Clinton said.
"You may have heard that he has long refused to release his tax returns the way every other nominee for president has done for decades," she said. "What is he hiding? It must be really terrible."
As a part of the strategy to appeal to blue-collars workers in this region, Clinton on Monday went after what she called "egregious corporate behavior" that undermines the middle-class.
"Look at Wells Fargo -- really shocking, isn't it?" Clinton said. "One of the nation's biggest banks, bullying thousands of employees into committing fraud against unsuspecting customers, secretly opening up millions of accounts for people without their consent, even their knowledge, misusing their personal information and sticking customers with hidden fees."
Talking Points Memo reports:
“While millions of American families, including mine and yours, were working hard, paying our fair share it seems he was contributing nothing to our nation,” she continued. “Imagine that. Nothing for Pell grants to help kids go to college. Nothing for veterans. Nothing for our military.”
Calling Trump a “category by himself” even within the “cowboy culture” of big business, Clinton ridiculed the real estate mogul for losing money in the lucrative casino industry and trying to frame his tax avoidance as the deft maneuvering of a savvy businessman.
“He's taking corporate excess and making a business model out of it,” she continued. “He abuses his power and games the system and puts his own interests ahead of the country. It is Trump first and every one else last.”
“Trump was taking from America with both hands and leaving the rest of us with the bill,” Clinton said of the tax report. “Now, he says he's the one that could fix things but that's like letting the fox guard the hen house, right?”
Corpus Christi Caller TImes endorses:
That we endorse Hillary Clinton for president should come as no surprise. There really is no other choice. And that's unfortunate — not because, as many Americans have allowed themselves to be led to believe, the country desperately needs a viable alternative to her. It's unfortunate because of the shadow it casts upon the former secretary of state/senator/first lady's genuine worthiness to be our first female president.
She is not, as has been sold, a mere lesser of two evils. Her experience and intellect would make her a standout in any group of candidates. Like President Obama said and didn't need to be fact-checked, she's more qualified than him or her husband.
We perceive in Clinton the capability to bridge the divide — to define rather than exploit our problems and pursue intelligent solutions. Her "basket of deplorables" comment made the task more difficult but it was a rare lapse by an otherwise level-headed servant leader with a history of self-correcting resilience. The former senator's Republican colleagues remember her fondly as a middle-ground-seeking master of the art of deal-making. If there is to be a return to bipartisanship, she is the one to lead it.
The woman who memorably declared that women's rights are human rights and that it takes a village to raise a child is the candidate who has the right priorities and the perceptiveness to make this divided but great country greater.
Clinton’s bid for the presidency has strong international support.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
Post-war America designed and defended the world's liberal order: free trade, open societies and such. It held the line against the Soviets and their sundry allies from the Middle to Asia. The European democracies profited handsomely from the toils of the United States, the world's custodian. Now, the United States leads the battle against the Islamists, the spearhead of religious totalitarianism. How would an inward-bound America sustain an open-ended defense?
Given 24/7 exposure to the presidential contest, Europe and the rest are fully aware of the millstones around Clinton's neck: the emails, the reputation for dissembling, the noxious mix of politics and profiteering. But "The Donald," who in the first debate clearly failed Statecraft 101 again, isn't just the greater of two evils. If he means what he says, as president he would put a sledgehammer to the global architecture the United States has safeguarded for 70 years.
Naturally, the Europeans and most of the rest don't look forward to a Trumpist America. Only the Kremlin would cheer, calculating that Trump would erode America's standing in the world, if not render the country ungovernable.
But why should Americans care what the rest of the world thinks?
Charles Wilson, the former chief executive of General Motors, once famously said: "What was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa." Make that: "What is good for the world is good for America." The United States is the linchpin of the liberal order. Take it out, and the United States, with its far-flung global interests, will be in decline.
Politico reports the obvious:
Hillary Clinton has done more than just stifle Donald Trump’s momentum in the presidential race. She's also established a far clearer path to winning an Electoral College majority than Trump, according to the latest battleground-state polls.
In the aftermath of the first debate, Clinton has opened up a lead in vote-rich Florida, according to two polls conducted there. The Democratic former secretary of state is also ahead in post-debate polls in Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia. And while her lead in some of those states is more precarious than in others, current polls indicate Clinton would win upwards of 300 electoral votes if the election were held today.
Counting the states where her lead in the polling average is 3 points or greater — and adding them to the states President Barack Obama won in 2012 (plus the District of Columbia) — Clinton would win 302 electoral votes to Trump’s 215. Only Nevada and North Carolina are currently within that 3-point margin.
LeBron James writes for Business Insider:
I support Hillary because she will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama. I believe in what President Obama has done for our country and support her commitment to continuing that legacy.
Like my foundation, Hillary has always been a champion for children and their futures. For over 40 years, she’s been working to improve public schools, expand access to health care, support children’s hospitals, and so much more.
She wants to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in. She’ll rebuild schools that are falling apart and put more money into computer science. She’ll make sure teachers are paid what they deserve so they can give everything to their students.
She also has plans to make college a reality for more people in America, especially for those who can’t afford it. My kids in Akron are proof of the hope and motivation that come from knowing college can be in their future, no matter what obstacles they might be facing.
Finally, we must address the violence, of every kind, the African-American community is experiencing in our streets and seeing on our TVs. I believe rebuilding our communities by focusing on at-risk children is a significant part of the solution. However, I am not a politician, I don’t know everything it will take finally to end the violence. But I do know we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified. Policies and ideas that divide us more are not the solution. We must all stand together — no matter where we are from or the color of our skin. And Hillary is running on the message of hope and unity that we need.
Melissa McEwan writes for Shareblue:
Ambitious women must inevitably contend with accusations that they are driven by unfettered ego, that they are ruthless in their pursuit of power, that they will stop at nothing to achieve their objectives. They are called entitled, unscrupulous, scheming, dishonest. They are accused of regarding themselves as queens, and they are described in the most unflattering terms.
Hillary Clinton is no exception. Indeed, she is the rule.
One of my favorite examples can be found in this piece by wrestler-turned-governor Jesse Ventura, who wrote: “This is simply about winning the election and she will do anything and everything to win, even if it means bringing Bernie Sanders in as [her] VP.”
The horror that she might have asked another popular Democratic candidate to be her running mate! Can you even imagine?! Clearly, this woman will stop at nothing!
This is pretty typical of the examples provided of Clinton’s alleged merciless opportunism, along with instances of issues on which she’s changed her position, which is invariably attributed to political expediency rather than the possibility that she has learned new information and progressed like a progressive candidate is reasonably expected to do.
She is running a campaign rooted in policy, centered on listening to voters’ needs, and focused on breaking down barriers of bigotry and oppression.
And, despite running against an opponent who is keen to run a race to the bottom, she has refused to let herself be dragged down in the muck with him, instead showing us her ethics and mettle by continuing to campaign with decency and integrity no matter how much he baits her.
That is not doing anything to win. That is doing everything that deserves to win.
Sarah Jones writes for Politicus USA:
The real story of Hillary Clinton is the story of an all-American, middle-class girl who worked her way up through the ranks via hard work until she is actually on the trail as a major party presidential nominee. It’s a classic story of the underdog, but that’s not the story America knows best.
Clinton was a nerdy geek who worked her way from her middle-class background into a good college, into graduating from Yale Law School. Her first job out of law school was for the Children’s Defense Fund at a time when many women didn’t work at all. Not exactly the big dollars. Not exactly the choice a “corporate whore” would make. (Ugly but this is how she’s been characterized, ironically funded by the people behind making sure corporations buy our government.)
Clinton fought for CHIP when her dream of universal healthcare fell through. Eight million children today are using CHIP.
Clinton worked for 40 plus years advocating for the voiceless and the powerless, not corporations.
If we wrote a script about a heroine who goes to DC and makes it big, this is exactly how she would be written — and she would be cheered and beloved for it. Our heroine has been fighting for 40 years to help average Americans like her parents. She’s weathered every horrible accusation imaginable, from a well-funded giant hell-bent on destroying her.
The nerdy geek making it big through hard work and a fierce dedication to minorities, children, women, families… this is the heroine in the movie.
Brian Beutler writes for New Republic:
The Republican Party nominated an ignorant, bigoted, authoritarian candidate to be president of the United States. The best message that the country can send with the popular vote is that if you try to win the presidency by stoking race hatred and promising to degrade the Constitution, you will lose and lose badly—that a fascist does not have an even-odds chance of becoming the most powerful person in the world.
If you believe this election is basically a lock, or you happen not to live in a battleground, and are thus flirting with the idea of abstaining or of voting for a third party, ask yourself if you want to live in a country that has established proof of concept for a more polished racist demagogue. Do you want children growing up in a country where white supremacy has been re-normalized? Where misogyny doesn’t disqualify men for high office? Where erratic ignorance is placed in the running for the world’s highest award? Or would you rather send a message that if a major party nominates a fascist to be president of the United States—someone whose very character threatens national and global stability—the overwhelming majority of the country will flock to the candidate standing between him and the White House, and he will be left with the deplorables.
