My wife and I were discussing the latest news from TrumpWorld™ : the release of a recording in which he brags about groping and fondling women in order to get them to submit sexually to him. We realized that while we could think of any number of pejorative words for women whose sexuality does not fit in with conventional morality, there were relatively few words we could come up with for men who behave as Trump does.
After some pondering and dictionary searching, we came up with lecher/lech and dirty old man. But then I found this very useful article by Russell Smith in The Globe and Mail, dating from the DSK scandal back in 2011. Note that the purpose of the article was to emphasize that there is a range of sexual misconduct represented in pejoratives being applied to DSK, and that treating them all as perfectly interchangeable was adversely affecting his right to a presumption of innocence—this isn’t related to the point I want to make.
To me what the article is is a gold mine of terms that could be applied to Trump and other men who act as he does with respect to women. Here is the most relevant portion:
Note that the nouns are all—with the possible exception of stud—pejorative. DSK is frequently referred to as a womanizer. Synonyms at the benign end of the list are skirt-chaser, ladies' man, lady-killer, playboy, player, Lothario, Don Juan, Casanova, Romeo, wolf and dog. These are all faintly humorous. To be called one of these is to be called merely embarrassing or ridiculous, not a violent criminal. A little bit further down the list come the implications of infidelity and callousness (philanderer, cad, gigolo, manwhore) and then of dissipation (libertine, rake, roué, reprobate, degenerate, profligate, debaucher) and then of ugliness or ickiness (satyr, lecher, sleazebag).
Age demands a subclass of insults too: A man over 50 with a lot of girlfriends is a dirty old man or a pervert….
Then, at the bottom of the ladder come the implications of coercion or assault: groper, frotteur, predator, rapist. There are some colourful slang terms in Britain: An octopus is a guy whose hands go everywhere on you; he's also known as an MTF (must touch flesh).
Nouns for sexual liaisons also carry differing moral overtones: DSK's extramarital affairs have been described as dalliances (not so bad), indiscretions (cringe-making), philandering (totally bad) or, in the most common media catch-all, inappropriate. [italics mine]
While most of these words would fit reasonably well with Trump, it seems to me that dirty old man, lecher, groper, and philanderer are probably the most useful, although applying roué, octupus and MTF to his philandering might also be particularly amusing.
