I have to say that I am concerned.
Maybe it is in a concern troll sort of way. But I don’t think so.
As some people here know, I have worked for Planned Parenthood, and wrote all about security related to reproductive care health facilities. As a result of my experiences, I know the ground fight related to birth control and abortion well.
I am 100% convinced that the Religious Right doesn’t care a bit about Trump. They don’t even believe he will be President very long. They are voting for Trump because they want Pence. Trump could indeed slander everything they hold dear and it wouldn’t make a difference...because they are sure he will be impeached anyways.
I don’t think we, as Democrats, are doing a good job painting Pence as the monster he really is and that he is NOT a viable alternative. And painting that picture needs to be done now. Tony Perkins just came out and straight up said that all he cares about is the Supreme Court, which, while sort of true, is not entirely true because they get the bonus of the firebreathing anti-gay stance of Pence. You are talking about a guy who cratered Indiana economically and is one of the worst, if not THE worst, legislators/governors for women and LGBT rights.
You are talking about a guy who mandated funerals for fetuses. And then somehow says he isn’t interested in ‘punishing women.’
You are talking about a guy who is poised to wipe out Planned Parenthood (and he will, if we do not get the Senate) and roll back civil rights and reproductive rights. And he will. Because this is why Pence believes he is on this earth.
He got a Get Out of Jail Free card at the VP debate, and I wonder if that was part of the strategy. They probably knew Trump was going to be the focus of Hillary’s campaign and that was fine, because he could slide under the door like a gecko.
We cannot allow this. I feel like the role of taking down Pence is falling to social media — we have seen posts from a person forced into one of Pence’s ‘conversion camps’, posts about his record. But what I haven’t seen is an organized takedown attempt to make the entire top of the ticket look like hemlock. And that is where we need to go.
It is not enough to take down Trump, we need to take the opportunity to take down sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and anti-intellectualism and send a clear message to the world and country that the evolving majority is done with that, and is better than that.
