This won’t be a long diary but I was reminded of something tonight as I watched Donald Trump in a crouch being hustled off stage in response to a perceived threat.
Nearly 50 years ago in 1968, on the eve of the federal election, the Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau was on the reviewing stand in Montreal for the St Jean Baptiste parade. Separatist supporters gathered across the street and started hurling rocks and bottles at those on the stand. Security begins to move people out of danger except one won’t go—the Prime Minister. In the clip you can see him push away his RCMP security and he stands defiant, towards the end almost alone as the rocks and bottles sailed past. My father said to me as we were watching, “that just got him a majority government”. He was right. There won’t be another one like him for a long time although I’m hopeful for Justin.
