Yesterday I walked into work and my white, straight male co worker turned to me and said “Don’t worry, it won’t be that bad”. I almost punched the wall. He forgot two words: “For him”...It won’t be that bad for him.
Yesterday I woke up devastated as woman, a brown person, a mother and a citizen.
My heart hurt for:
Every gay couple now wondering if they should proceed with a family, marriage, adoption or just plain coming out.
Every person who has a family who is an immigrant and now worries about harassment about residency status.
For every Muslim who now worries about the place they worship and if it’s safe.
Every woman who looked at their daughter and wondered if they will be arranging an illegal abortion if she ever needs one.
Every person who felt disgusted about the sexism and racism that has flowed out of this election.
For every minority who is wonders if every encounter with the police is going to be a life or death situation.
No White America, I’m not that interested in your pretzel twisting explanations on why you as a majority voted from Trump. I’m not that interested in the “but they voted for Obama”. I swear to god that is the new “I have a black friend”.
Let me spell it out for you. Voting for Obama once or twice doesn’t give you a pass on Trump. You vote for racist...You are a racist. Sorry you can’t wash off the stank.
Plenty of people are hurting just as bad as you and they didn’t vote for Trump.
White America decided that their personal wants and desires would be realized off the backs of other people. Yes, lets deport millions of people so that you can have a “fantasy manufacturing job that is never coming back”. Yes let roll back equality for so many people because you feel uncomfortable in the bathroom. Yes lets take away women’s rights because hey we need to appeal to the middle.
Let me have my moment to mourn. I earned it. My demographic voted 96% for Hillary. We always vote for the good guy/gal and we are going to unproportionately feel the pain.
And for all the Bern folks dancing on the rest of our misery. Just stop. Go form your own party called “All about me!” Because that is all I hear from you...Look at me, look at me...Fuck you and your pain...Look at me”
Look, I’m not angry about the Johnson/Stein voters. They didn’t vote for the racist. I will give you this one. Maybe I don’t agree with the principal of it but I certainly appreciate the solidarity against evil.
To all those in White America who are allies, thank you! To everyone who just sat back and was sad. Who didn’t try to explain it away. Who were able to look me in the face and say...”Yes racism”. Sure it’s complicated and there are additional reasons but yes racism. I appreciate it more than you can ever now. I know you and I are in this fight together. Thank you to the multi generations of women sitting in pairs at the bar yesterday. Each of us trying to talk our fellow friend out of the funk. Thank you! You get it.
For the rest of you...Can you just shut up for five seconds and let the rest of us mourn for our country in peace.
