Like all liberals, progressives, Democrats, I’m reeling from shock and grieving from the election results. I’m angry, too, wanting to run away and fearing the level of control Republicans will have. But the operative word in that last sentence is “will.”
In his latest 23-minute video (currently found only on his Facebook page), Van Jones advises that we all take some time to grieve, heal, and become strong again. He recommends doing that until Thanksgiving. Then he reminds us that we have 70 days until Trump takes office, and there are some things we may be able to accomplish within that time.
Jones says there are three terrible fights that will demand us gathering our toughest resolve to undertake. First, we must prepare to stand in solidarity with our Muslim and Latino communities. Second, we must get ready for the Supreme Court fight. And third, we must gear up for a terrible fight on climate change.
He adds that there are five “surprising” areas where we might be able to get something done. Those areas are healthcare, poverty, infrastructure, trade, and criminal justice. Jones then explains where our opportunities lie within those areas.
Finally, Jones says, “The most important card we have is you,” that once we take a bit of time to heal, we must find our “authentic place”—not one of frantic panic—and then “be,…be connected to who you are and why you care so much, why you love folks so much.” He adds that we need “to be deeply grounded, deeply connected so we can make wise decisions going forward.”
Jones also addresses how we can organize ourselves and participate in the challenges we face.
This may well be the best 23 minutes you spend right now. Jones provides not only a basic game plan but also a modicum of hope. Because we—you and I—are the defenders of justice. In my words, “We have good on our side.”
