I have the sinking feeling that Michelle Obama was wrong. As much as I admire her dignity, eloquence, and grace, when they go low we can't just go high anymore.
Democrats and progressives need to fight the evil we face both low and high. When they go low, we kick their feet out and drown them in the muck. They went low for eight years -- spun racist lies, screamed "traitor" at the President during the state of the union, obstructed his constitutional duties and legislative plans, and tried to blow up the country's debt just to score a couple points. The points they accrued helped them with voters. Going low worked for them. When we only went high, we ceded the low ground to them. And they won.
But we can learn from them. We can keep going high, they'll never beat us high. But we can't shy away from going low too. And when they try to go high, couching their destructive plans in pretty language, we shiv them in the ankles.
Organize, write, listen, convince, like Democrats have always done. But ALSO obstruct, filibuster, exaggerate, hack, leak, investigate, blame. Hold our breaths until we turn blue, and then deny we did anything.
Because we have to win next time, even if we have to get dirty in the process.
