Still seeing a stupid number of circular firing squad posts about who lost the election and why. There were many factors at play here, as this article from ThinkProgress explains, some fairly straightforward and some more subtle and complex, and we all bear some responsibility for at least a few of them. Read it.
Discussing blame is only useful inasmuch as it allows us to figure out the cause of a problem, and take action to address that problem. We are all culpable in this disaster. Stop saying "it was all this" or "it was all that." Take the time to understand and accept all of the reasons at play here, because we've got a shitload of work to do over the next few years.
The long-term solution is politics. Get involved. When the people see the government as the enemy, we are broken. The whole point of the United States Constitution is that government is supposed to BE the people, to be our collective voice against monied and vested power, and our organized framework for helping and supporting each other. We have to make our politics and our government accountable to the needs of the people, all of the people, or we will only continue to decay.
But politics takes time. Right now, on a daily basis, we must be the best and boldest and loudest and most moral and caring human beings we can be. While things have never truly been right in America, or indeed anywhere in the world, our society now stands on the edge of a precipice.
It is now incumbent on all of us to stand up, boldly and strongly and defiantly, to use what privilege each of us has to defend those around us in every way possible, on every occasion possible, to push back forcefully and show that bigotry and hatred and violence are STILL not okay, no matter who is "in charge," and that we will not allow ourselves to be a society where they are.
This is not normal. This is not "politics as usual."
And we must NEVER allow it to become normal.
Do not move on; move forward. I am with you, as I hope you are with me.
