We are to blame. Democratic ideals have been compromised for the last thirty years. A sell out to moneyed interests and a betrayal of the working class have a created a voter base in which many members feel that they are a rubber stamp for the candidate of the DNC’s choice. We democrats allowed our elected representatives to coddle bankers who should have been jailed instead of bailed-out. We did not make them demand prosecutions for war crimes that were warranted. We did not make them help homeowners’ whose houses were foreclosed on because of crooked mortgages. We let our elected representatives wallow in corporate cash to the extent that they did not dare listen to the needs of the people because of fear that their donors would get mad if they did. It amazes me that democrats have stayed loyal for so long after being lied to, ignored, and told that the political game has to be played by the DNC’s rules or court disaster in the elections. Well, disaster has struck and they called the tune but they don’t want the accountability for the outcome. Tough shit.
Accountability starts with the people who made the rules no longer get to call the shots. Letting them maintain power will further demoralize the party. New leadership has to make democratic values priority instead of pay to play politics. This may be too early in the mourning process to get into but I read that a new head of the DNC is being sought. The new chair needs to be a progressive and not a former lobbyist. Whoever needs to see the potential of an inspiring candidate being able to raise the funds necessary to campaign. Special interests may contribute but their influence would be secondary to democratic objectives that will help the working class. We have to get back to being a party of the people.
