I kind of hate that I think this after we just ran a former First Lady who lost, but as of right now Michelle Obama stands head and shoulders above everyone else in the Democratic field as a potential presidential candidate in 2020. She has said she won't do it, and maybe she won't, but she is a magnificent campaigner and can generate positive and inspiring coverage and communicate a progressive message like no one else in the party today. Barack Obama emerged from nowhere to capture the nomination in 2008, but he made his big splash at the 2004 Democratic Convention and the presidential buzz started immediately. So someone else trying to emerge from the woodwork is already lagging. So, who really stood out at this year’s convention? I don't think anyone else held a candle to Michelle Obama. And no one was as effective as her on the campaign trail. I'm open to all kinds of possibilities for 2020 and it's a bit premature to worry about it. There are plenty of worthy and capable Democrats out there but I truly don't see anyone who could get it done like Michelle.
