[UPDATE] I’ve just learned of the Million Woman March. Maybe we can combine and grow this into a display of protest heretofore never witnessed by Washington! Please excuse my ignorance of the plans of my sisters in their endeavor. We’re all in this together.
An idea I just had, and I desperately want feedback and hope this contributes to meaningful resistance in the face of what we’re facing.
I’m just reading today that the popular vote for Hillary has exceeded that for Donald Trump by over a million votes.
THE IDEA: Organize a “Million More March” on Washington (possibly before or up to the inauguration) to physically demonstrate the fact that more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than Trump.
It should also feature speakers/protests on the blatant racism/sexism/xenophobia taking place now, and in a strong show of intolerance for that intolerance.
I work for one of the largest museums of African American history, second only to the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History & Culture… perhaps the march encompasses that and the MLK National Memorial as a protest during the inauguration (NOTE: as 501(c)3 institutions, most of these museums/memorials cannot take a political stance, so I’m not suggesting that, but their audience reach is such that thousands, hundreds of thousands, can be mobilized. In my homeworld of metropolitan Detroit, there is the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Arab American National Museum, and the Holocaust Memorial Center, that could all alert their audiences to such an undertaking — and that’s just southeastern Michigan. For this to REALLY work we have to engage institutions and audiences across the country) This march can be a focal point to show the nation that there is no Trump mandate, and in fact is a majority that is in direct opposition to his policies, methods, attitudes, etc.
Please let me know your thoughts. I don’t know if we have the time to organize this before the inauguration, but the Million Man March showed it could be done, and this time, with strong participation from representatives of black, white, Latino, LGBTQ, Muslim, Jew, Americans and non-Americans, we can easily create a movement on the mall that captures the attention of America.
Peace and love, resist, and keep the faith. “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Our ancestors demand that we rise up to create a better future for our children. That’s the reason. My two black children, born in 2008 and 2012, and who have only ever known their black president — their future is my reason. I will fight for their future with every ounce I have.
