While the CA-49th race is no longer (or perhaps In should say not currently) listed as a close race (defined as less than 2% difference between candidates, it still isn’t called as of this writing.
This from Colonel Applegate’s Facebook page about 13 hours ago:
Latest figures for Orange County and San Diego County. SD county with about 273,000 ballots (total in county) remaining to be counted: Applegate 99802 / Issa 89336 (+10466)
OC with about 92484 ballots (total in county) remaining to be counted: Applegate 29298 / Issa 45092 (-15794)
Net result (-5238). Note that almost all remaining ballots are provisional and these tend to go Democratic. However, every vote counts and that is why we need Ballot Count observers in both ROV offices every day and every hour that ballots are being reviewed. Ballots are being counted Saturday, Nov 19, Mon -Wed (11/21-23) and Friday (Nov 25). If you can help, contact Carol at volunteer@applegateforcongress.com to get details and sign up.

That’s a pretty impressive showing and the ballots are still being counted — by the way if you can help observe at either county location, do contact the Col’s people — it matters.
And why does it matter? From the local (San Diego) NBC affiliate:
The race is tight, which is why both sides have hired observers to watch provisional ballots being counted.
But the observers cost money.
He is concerned provisional ballots, which are from voters who for various reasons may or may not be eligible to have their votes counted, are not trending in his favor.
Election observers cost money and Darrell isn’t interested in spending his and maybe he doesn’t have enough supporters willing to donate their time so guess who’s going low?
Sure enough Darrell Issa is doing his best subterranean impersonation with this charming fund raising letter to his supporters (a lot of whom are likely not constituents) he’s suggesting that the evil Democrats/liberals are going to steal the election.
The same guy who during the campaign tried to tie the Colonel to Nancy Pelosi until he figured that wasn’t working, threatened to sue over public record allegations of his own alleged corruption, then tried to use the Colonel’s personal life (unsubstantiated I might add) before being all warm and fuzzy with Obama (and getting called on it) has gone to the classic racist xenophobic class depths of darkness that so many of us have come to associate with him — evil liberals insisting that every valid vote be counted or as Darrel put it stealing it from him.
In the letter, Issa also writes: “Once the count is that close, democrats will attempt to force the registrars to allow thousands of illegal unregistered voters to influence the election.”
“We cannot allow our election to be corrupted by outside influences and illegal votes,” he wrote to his supporters
Yup, I stumbled upon that bit of special sweetness right after reading tweets suggesting that any/all votes that Hillary was getting in California were from “illegals” because, you know, California. If we’re not fruits and nuts, sanctuary cities, or PC nut jobs we’re all about illegal immigration — sigh. How vile is that? Issa vile apparently.

Darrell’s going low, low, low. Applegate high — here’s hoping his numbers keep going higher too and if you can help, WildLilac and all the residents of the 49th could really use a representative who will really represent the district.

Applegate picked up 615 votes to narrow Issa’s lead to 4,623.
Updated table with details and corrected (my bad) vote percentages for Orange County votes.
Counting continues Monday.
