Over the last week, two of the Colorado Electors for Hillary Clinton have started to try to do something historic: use the Electoral College to save the country from a corrupt, vain demagogue.
Arguments have been advanced here and elsewhere (time.com/...) in recent days, and several online petitions have been circulating, one with approximately 4.5 million signatures (www.change.org/...).
Two Electors from Colorado, Micheal Baca and P. Bret Chiafalo, have thought the same thing and are trying to make it possible. They want the Electors to deliberate and to settle on a sane, moderate Republican, someone who could help heal the divide—because we all know our “President-Elect” isn’t up to the task.
They’ve been speaking to media, with their biggest so far on Tucker Carlson’s show. They have a Facebook group (www.facebook.com/...), a Twitter account and hashtag (twitter.com/...). They have a NationBuilder site (www.hamiltonelectors.com/...) for pledges of donations, activism, and lawyerly skills. That last part is critical, because it is a sure thing that they will be challenged by states and probably by Trump himself.
In addition to gathering resources, they want to make the public aware of this possibility and to gain support. They do not, however, want people to be reaching out to electors themselves right now—especially for harassment and with death threats. While I’m sure people here won’t do that, There are news reports out of Georgia, Arizona, and Iowa of electors receiving a flood of calls and e-mails. Instead, call your local media to request coverage, and talk about it with your friends and family over Thanksgiving.
This is a pivotal moment in our country’s history. Will you help?
P.S. This weekend they said they will be hosting an AMA on Reddit: www.reddit.com/...
