Coming at this as a near total ignoramus about election law and practice, could electors conceivably request an audit before casting their electoral votes? As far as electors voting against Trump outright, I have a hard time believing enough Republican electors would buck tradition and do anything but play their ceremonial role. I imagine few would do so unless they were sure that the country was overwhelmingly behind them. However a middle road for electors might be to ask for vote counts to be verified before casting their votes.
If such a thing were possible, having Republican electors request the audit would avoid the sore-loser, grasping-at-straws taint of Democrats doing it, and the electors would look reasonable and thorough rather than like renegades. The rationale offered for doing this wouldn’t have to be suspicion of shenanigans, just the magnitude of the popular vote win and the closeness of some of the state vote totals, and a desire to unify the country by reinforcing the legitimacy of the winner.
If, a big if in my opinion, the popular vote count in key states changed decisively or fraud were proven, we'd be in uncharted waters, but better uncharted waters than we're in now.
