It was one year ago that “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day posted its first profile of Martha Roby, the current U.S. House Representative for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. Roby was once interviewed about the “redistribution of wealth” in the United States, she came out hard against the concept, until the reporter asked then how she could supports farm subsidies and aid for banks, and THEN Roby angrily called the interview a “trap” before storming out less than a minute later with her press secretary demanding the recording to prevent it from being aired. Roby has also gotten on board more than one outrage train the GOP have launched, whether it was taking to the floor of the House to give a speech about the controversy surrounding the “sting” videos of Planned Parenthood and arguing that “these aren’t specimens, they’re babies” or sitting on the Benghazi Select Committee to grill Hillary Clinton by asking whether she was “home alone” on the night of the attacks on the diplomatic compound in Benghazi. Hillary, in true alpha female form, laughed at her, before answering “no”. Roby tried following up with a “I don’t see what’s so funny” to not look like a dope, but that’s an uphill battle for her, frankly. Roby also has participated in your typical GOP obstructionist voting record pattern, including votes against equal pay for women, LGBT rights, debt ceiling increases, keeping the government open (and trying to keep it shut at the end of the 2013 Government Shutdown), and even voted against Hurricane Sandy relief funding.
Her partisan voting record has continued:
- November 19th, 2015: Roby votes for the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act, reacting to the terror attacks in Paris by jihadists from France and Belgium by trying to create greater restrictions to keep out Syrian refugees, of whom exactly zero were involved in those attacks.
- February 2nd, 2016: Martha Roby votes for HR 3762, the 61st attempt by Congressional Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act (which is still working better than was predicted).
- May 19th, 2016: Rep. Roby votes against House Amendment 1079, which would have prohibited the use of federal funds for discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. So if you were wondering, yes, she’s pro-discrimination, apparently.
Martha Roby coasted to victory in the 2016 GOP Primary to win re-election with 66% of the vote in a three-way primary, and now moves on to face Democrat Nathan Mathis tomorrow, who will be a huge underdog, what with Roby enjoying Alabama’s 2nd having a +17 Republican lean in the Cook Partisan Voting Index. Well, that and Mathis doesn’t have the support of the Democratic Party because as of 2010 he was a Republican, and only started running as a Democrat in 2014 (also without their blessing, because he doesn’t support any other Democrat).
In other words… we’re going to have to say “Congresswoman Roby” with a sigh until at least 2019. Barring any sudden resignations due to scandals, of course.
