Did you wake up this morning feeling demoralized, angry, frightened, lost, or maybe all of the above? You’re not alone. When we feel anxious and/or depressed about something in our lives, it can often help to take some type of constructive action, right? So, this morning I found the phone numbers of the offices of my two senators and my congresswoman on Google and I called and said:
“I’m a constituent with a message for the senator. I’m calling to say that I am opposed to Donald Trump, as is my state and the majority of the nation, which is why he lost the popular vote. I’m calling to say that I do not want bipartisanship, cooperation, and unity. I want opposition. I want my senator to stand up and fight Trump’s policies. Thank you.”
This only took a couple minutes and venting made me feel a little bit better. What’s more, imagine if thousands of us were to do it. I believe it would send a clear message to congress that we need them to be courageous and steadfast right now. As I type this, the “narrative” about this election is being written by the mainstream media. We have a brief window of opportunity to help shape it. Will we roll over and resign ourselves to the destruction of the ideas and institutions we hold dear or will we unite in principled opposition to authoritarianism? We are the majority.
I’ll leave you with one final thought:
Every small act of resistance must be celebrated and nurtured like a tiny seedling. This is how we grow a movement.
