Watergate investigative reporter Carl Bernstein says 'fact-free' Trump is worse than Nixon

Carl Bernstein, a political commentator who is well-known for helping to break the historic 1970 Watergate scandal, did not mince words about Donald Trump during Sunday’s CNN interview with Brian Stelter. In fact, Bernstein, whose investigative reporting with Bob Woodward led to the resignation of President Nixon while at the Washington Post — said the “factless” Trump is worse than Nixon.

"No president, including Richard Nixon, has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way this President-elect does."

Bernstein also brought up Trump’s “emotional” Twitter responses, more recently to the Indiana union leader Chuck Jones who expressed disappointment with Trump's Carrier deal. Trump retorted saying Jones has done “a terrible job representing workers.” Bernstein calls this “bullying.”

Stelter: You say trump is running faster than the press defining the agenda. How do you propose we catch up to him?

Bernstein: By doing our job in terms of the best obtainable version of the truth which is our mission. Trump lives and thrives in a fact-free environment. No president including Richard Nixon has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way this president-elect does. And it has something to do with the growing sense of authoritarianism that he and his presidency are projecting and the danger of it is obvious and he's trying to make the conduct of the press the issue, not his own conduct.

Stelter: Give us an example of that “fact ignorance.”

Bernstein: I would just take his bullying approach to the union leader instead of going into the facts of what the Carrier deal was and what the unions in that institution have done. Everything that he controverts, he doesn't go to a fact-based argument. He goes to an emotional argument. What we have seen throughout the campaign is pathological disdain for the truth, a kind of lie, and ease with lying, that we have not seen before.

Not the first time Bernstein has gone after Trump. In June the legendary reporter called the Republican presidential nominee a “Neo-Fascist.” Thank you, Carl Bernstein, and every pundit who speaks out and speaks the truth about Donald Trump. Americans need to know. The world needs to know.
