What if Trump doesn’t get the support of 270 electors? Here’s a modest proposal.
On Monday, December 19th, the Electoral College will likely elect Donald Trump. But if 37 or more GOP electors choose someone else, the selection goes to the House of Representatives, with each state getting one vote. Obviously the GOP is in control at this point and would not select Hillary Clinton, despite her being the most qualified candidate. But they would have a chance to install a president who would be far less dangerous to the security and reputation of the United States. And it wouldn't really be going against the will of the people, since Trump only got 47% of the vote. Clearly, 53% wanted someone else, and the Electoral College obviously agreed if they don't give Trump the 270 votes needed to win.
So I suggest that if the House gets to decide, Democrats and Republicans in that body should agree to a resolution that would remove Trump from consideration, then provide a choice between the candidates chosen by Republicans to represent them in the prior two elections -- John McCain and Mitt Romney. The House could choose between them, and the winner could select his own Vice President (as long as it's not Sarah Palin again). Crisis averted.
