Donald Trump has already made it clear that the president can't have a conflict of interest.
Pressed to respond to criticism in other areas, he was defiant. He declared that “the law’s totally on my side” when it comes to questions about conflict of interest and ethics laws. “The president can’t have a conflict of interest,” he said.
That was only the start of redefining the world to fit Trump. If you don’t believe that Trump is acting presidential, you're wrong.
Asked by Mr. Tapper whether Mr. Trump’s recent posting of misinformation on Twitter about millions of undocumented immigrants voting was presidential, Ms. Conway defended the message.
“He’s the president-elect, so that’s presidential behavior,” she said.
Everyone misunderstood. It wasn’t that Trump needed to pivot to change his behavior. It was that reality needed to pivot around Trump. No matter what Trump does or says, that’s now presidential. By decree.
But Trump surrogate Scottie Nell Hughes didn’t even pause at that barrier. The target was much bigger.
And so one thing that has been interesting this entire campaign season to watch, is that people that say facts are facts—they're not really facts. Everybody has a way—it's kind of like looking at ratings, or looking at a glass of half-full water. Everybody has a way of interpreting them to be the truth, or not truth. There's no such thing, unfortunately, anymore as facts.
There’s no such thing as facts. Which makes much more amorphous concepts like “rights” and “justice” absolutely laughable.
Hughes followed up with the Trump/Peter Pan definition of the truth—if enough people clap, that makes it so.
"And so Mr. Trump's tweet, amongst a certain crowd—a large part of the population—are truth. When he says that millions of people illegally voted, he has some—amongst him and his supporters, and people believe they have facts to back that up. Those that do not like Mr. Trump, they say that those are lies and that there are no facts to back it up."
Donald Trump can literally do no wrong. If he does it, it becomes right.
Donald Trump can tell no lie. If he says it, it becomes truth.
That’s very convenient for Donald Trump. Much less so for everyone else.
