It’s really simple. When a leader of a major political party will not allow an investigation into the hacking of an American election by a foreign power, this is akin to treason. When that same person threatened to challenge a sitting President if he dared call out the foreign power for interfering prior to the election, that is akin to treason.
The GOP these days does not care primarily about the USA; it cares about power over/in the USA—even if it leads to acts of treason, or what is close to it.
The Democrats need to start calling a spade a spade. This man is not a patriot. It is that simple. Quote Lindsey Graham and John McCain against him. This is just not normal, and it signals real danger for our country.
Coupled with the legislative coup in North Carolina and the destruction of any sense of order or propriety with the filibuster (I know, not technically, but this is what it was) of Merrick Garland for the supreme court, and we see what we have on our hands: one party refuses to lose, to admit loss, to put anything ahead of their own interests.
The GOP has never paid the price for this sort of strategy. The Democrats should make them do so, now.
1. Start calling Mitch McConnell out for treasonous acts. Simple as that: the Democrats will be called “shrill”, but the fact is that this is not the first time this sort of thing happened. Remember how difficult it was to get the GOP to agree to examine the 9/11 attacks? Anything to protect a Republican in power—to protect their own power. America comes second, here.
2. Filibuster any nominee to the Supreme Court for 4 years, 8 if necessary, until Garland gets on the court or we have a Democratic President. I normally do not support such action, but this is different: it is a drastic action but one that perfectly mirrors that of the GOP, which denied Obama the right to seat a Supreme Court judge. The GOP is not the only party that can seat Supreme Court nominees. That is not the American way.
3. Filibuster everything until a commission to study the Russians is put in place.
This is a start. The GOP is not behaving like a normal party. We accepted Trump as President-elect; they can never accept losing. They have not been able to do so since Clinton, whom they impeached for no good reason. This is a party that no longer is very American. Let’s say so. What is there to lose? They say the same thing about Democrats all the time.
