I think we need to work on educating liberal moderates on purpose of mass protest. Too often they see it only as a way of influencing elected officials and possibly companies through bad publicity.
The problem with this view of protest is you end up trying to make your protest look "peaceful and good" in the eyes of media and it is just way too easy to discredit a massive group of peaceful protesters with just one person who gets out of line.
So, if protest isn't about good publicity then what is it about?
It's about something much more frightening, something liberal moderates do not like to think about: It's a show of force. It's literally showing how many people a government will need to subdue physically.
Why do militaries have parades? For the same reason we need mass protest. In open conflict we can't hope to win, but we can make it really expensive and inconvenient.
This is the "stick" to peaceful protest's carrot. And it is essential. It has been essential in every mass social movement that has had any success.
But most people I don't know don't even see this.
