Excuse me … but WHAT. THE. FUCK?
“The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is missing in action. ... They just got the living hell beat out of them, so why aren’t they down here fighting like they could be?”
“They really could do a lot more. On a scale of 1 to 10, they haven’t even reached the 1 mark yet—the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee or the national Democratic Party, I haven’t heard anything from ’em.” -Senate Candidate Foster Campbell (D-LA)
Got to give it to the GOP. They are fucking relentless—and never let a bad poll number get them down. Our party lives by them—and surrenders even before the election.
My God. We have an unapologetic misogynistic, narcissistic, unstable fucking anti-Semitic racist man-child taking office. We have one race left to serve as a counterweight to this madman. Yet the DSCC website doesn't even mention the race. Are you fuckers trying to lose?
So … after the shellacking our party took this past Nov. 8, are we SERIOUSLY sending the message to our Southern activists (like myself) that the Dems are just writing off the South? Are we going back to that failed strategy of only focusing on the coasts and Chicago?
Or maybe there is another major race going on that needs your attention? No, wait. THERE ISN'T!
The best hope for our party, and our nation, is to keep the margin for the GOP as thin as possible in the Senate. We have a real chance here—certainly a better chance than Trump ever had of becoming president!
THIS IS A WINNABLE RACE:
Point 1: Last year, there was another Democrat who was way down in the polls right before the election—and again, was all but written off. He wound up WINNING the governorship—in an off-year election—very comfortably. Democrat Bel Edwards WON 56-44%.
Edward’s message to Democrats on how he won: “campaign fiercely, mobilize urgently".
Two things Democrats are NOT doing yet for this Saturday’s Senate race.
Point 2: Runoff elections traditionally have extremely low turnout. (And polls are usually waaaay off on these races.) It always comes down to whose passions run deepest. That would be us.
Right now, Louisiana voters have an advantage no one else in America had on Nov. 8th: they know exactly who's coming into power and, by now, they know that their healthcare, Medicare, and freedoms are in peril.
Point 3: Democrats in this country are seething with rage, as they should be. More Democratic votes in the House, Senate, and Presidential elections—and yet we were completely shut out. There will be a rightwing agenda crammed down our throats that only a fringe minority wants. This is not how a democracy is supposed to work.
The upside is that this has spawned an army of angry progressives itching to do something useful. Instead of sitting on our hands, bitching about Trump's crazy picks, we could volunteer, donate and campaign to make it that much harder for Trump to stop his brutal attack on our nation.
Point 4: Foster Campbell is a good man!
USA Today said there are signs of a Democratic surge. Our side should be exploiting the hell out of this.
It should be all hands on deck. This site should be flooded with stories about this race. MoveOn.org, which set up a national phone bank system for people to make phone calls for Hillary, could do the same for Campbell if they wanted to.
The media is as silent on this as our national party is. Trump is very anti-First Amendment, and will soon control all three branches of government. You’d think the free press would want to cover this story more, but instead, we get a ton of stories about Trump’s fucked up Cabinet picks or his fucked up diplomacy. (As if this is breaking news—what did you think would happen?)
Bernstein argues we can't afford to write this race off—and we also have nothing to lose. By investing a little time, money, and effort this coming week, we could either a) win b) make it close—which, in a GOP state, would send a strong message to moderates to think twice before overreaching, or c) lose—which is what apparently what the DSCC is working towards anyway. Worst case scenario: we put in effort and come up short. SO WHAT? It's a red state in what has turned out to be a red, sucky year. That won't give anything more to Trump than he already has.
We have nothing to lose but a hell of a lot to gain by working to take this seat for the last major race of 2016.
I support the recounts and trying to persuade the electors, but those are about as pie-in-the-sky as you can get. Winning the LA Senate race is a much smaller hurdle and one in which we can all participate.
Want to channel your anger now instead of waiting till 2018? Here’s your chance. Take it. Our party sure won’t:
