The Electoral College voters must demand that they all receive an intelligence briefing on Trump’s Russian connections and their collusion in interfering with the US elections of 2016.
As I understand it, and regardless of all existing state-based arrangements, the Electoral College voters are meant to be casting their ballots based on an informed choice. The primary bit of information in their choice is the popular vote in their particular state, but it cannot be the only information in their decision.
For the electoral college to function as intended, the electors must also have information about the various candidates’ suitability for office. To that end, electors of all persuasions should demand that they be given a briefing from the nation’s intelligence agencies on what is known (not just speculated as we have out here in blog land) about Russian interference in the US 2016 elections and what is known about any collusion between those Russian actors and the Trump campaign.
For good measure, and to at least make a nod to this being a bipartisan project, they could also receive a briefing on whatever material the FBI thinks it has about the Clintons. (As an aside, it still bugs me that President Bill had that “chat” with AG Lynch at the Phoenix airport.)
The Electoral College electors hold a privileged position in the US polity. That privilege to exercise a very solemn responsibility should also confer the power to access the best possible information on which to base their decision.
