Bernie Sanders’ idea to have an “instant fundraiser” during his victory speech in New Hampshire last night was one of the most breathtaking moves I’ve ever witnessed in any political campaign. The fact that he has raised over $5 million dollars in small donations in less than 24 hours because of said “fundraiser” is simply unprecedented in American politics. Sanders is defying political “wisdom” and burning down the Washington establishment without ever so much as lighting a match. Bernie is doing what was deemed impossible before, not simply taking on the moneyed interests and SuperPACs, but making their millions of dollars a terrible liability to the other Presidential candidates. This is Koch Industries’ worst nightmare. Oligarchs are supposed to be able to buy the White House, and Citizens United was supposed to have given them the blank check upon which to write their bought-and-paid-for candidate’s name.
And now a 74-year-old socialist from Vermont has made all the oligarchs’ checks as worthless as Confederate dollars. The more they spend, the more beloved Bernie becomes. Our small donations will fund victory after victory in the coming months, as the oligarchs’ candidates, one by one, crash and burn.
February 10, 2016. Remember this date. It’s the date that cynicism died and real democracy started to return to America. It’s the date that the Sanders Presidency became the new political reality.
