First off, the timing of the caucus is a two- to four-hour window, getting there early, waiting in line for a long time to enter the building, then standing around, or sitting, waiting for the rest of the people in line to enter the building and then be registered.
Here is my list to start off why caucuses are undemocratic because the following people cannot vote:
People who have to work can’t vote.
People who don’t have transportation for that short window.
People who are not able to stand in line for such a long time due to a disability.
People are who sick with the flu or whatever winter illness is going around at the time.
People who are in rehab facilities after just having surgery, for instance.
People who are in nursing homes and are not ambulatory.
People who are in assisted living quarters and physically cannot undergo the physical requirements to attend a caucus.
People who have younger children that need supervision and the parent cannot either not afford to pay a caregiver or cannot find someone to take care of their children during that short window of time.
People who are going through radiation or chemotherapy and are too weak to go through the physical requirements of standing in line and waiting around to vote.
People who are caregivers for an elderly family member.
One other consideration is that your family member, your neighbor, even your boss is able to see how you vote. Exactly how democratic is that?
If allowing everyone to see how one votes, then why bother having the “drapes” around an electronic voting device so no one can see one’s vote?
Republicans are doing everything they can to take voting “rights” away from people. I think the Democratic Party in caucus states in the primaries are doing the same: Taking away a person’s right to cast their vote in a private way.
Anyone think that an employer will not do what they can to make one’s life miserable or even fire a person if the voter did not vote the way the employer wanted? Think about that. Remember the people who got fired for having bumper stickers on their cars that did not meet the approval of their boss? I do.
Hey Hey, Ho Ho, Democratic Primary Caucuses Have Got To Go.
Please feel free to add other reasons in the comments why a caucus system is NOT small d democratic.
