“Boy, were we wrong.”
It’s not everyday that you get to hear a conservative admitting an error; and even more rare when a conservative newspaper of some stature makes such an admission.
But today, the Manchester Union Leader, the largest newspaper in NH largest city, and a leading national conservative voice, published a retraction of their previous endorsement of Chris Christie for president.
Writing in Nov. 2015, the Union Leader’s publisher Joseph W. McQuaid titled his endorsement of Chris Christie “For our safety, for our future.”. A short two months later, McQuaid writes of Christie:
“Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend — and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency — demonstrated how wrong we were. Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.”
So much for safety and the future.
Beyond the entertainment value of MUL’s chagrin, this awkward moment speaks to the turmoil among conservatives this election season
